Living well on active monitoring

In this webinar we will look at what active monitoring is, the terminology used (watch and wait, active surveillance etc), who this might be recommended for, why it is a management strategy used in some types of lymphoma before, and sometimes following, treatment. We’ll also address some of the concerns and reassurances around it as a management strategy, including appointments, tests and patient-led follow-up.

Active monitoring is a management strategy used for many people with lymphomas that do not require treatment at the point of diagnosis (often low-grade lymphomas). The concept of active monitoring is alien to many people as a diagnosis of cancer is expected to be followed by urgent treatment. We understand that people often struggle with the concept and idea of active monitoring, explaining it to others, and living well physically and psychologically whilst on active monitoring.

By sharing the experiences of people with lived experience of active monitoring, we will look at the challenges adjusting to this management strategy, how people communicate to those around them, and strategies for ‘living well’ and coping with any worries or concerns, and any practical aspects of active monitoring on lifestyle.

Aims of the webinar:
  • To help you understand why active monitoring might be suggested for you, and reassure you that it is a management strategy.
  • To discuss some of the concerns and questions people may have about this management strategy, and share some of the coping strategies that others have used.
  • To help your family and friends to understand the concept of active monitoring and its impact, and how they can support you.
  • To help you understand the services we provide at Lymphoma Action, and how to find out more about them.

The live webinar will be recorded and a video of the webinar made available on the website (usually within a week of the webinar).

The panel will include 4 speakers and a Lymphoma Action chair:
  • Dr Wendy Osborne - Consultant Haematologist, Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Katherine Wight - Clinical Nurse Specialist, Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Jeff and Denise, who both have lived experience of active monitoring
  • Anne Hook - Publications Manager, Lymphoma Action.
