Meet our National Conference speakers

Our panels consist of leading lymphoma experts.

Our National Conference is returning on 13 May for anyone affected by lymphoma including family, friends and carers. We have a full conference programme including talks from medical professionals on mental and physical health, scans, new and future treatments for lymphoma. 

Our Medical panels will feature Dr Rob Lown, Consultant Haematologist from University Hospital Southampton, who will give an overview of lymphoma. Dr Lown completed his undergraduate training at University College London Medical School in 2004. He undertook a research MD in stem cell transplantation at University College London and the Anthony Nolan Research Institute. Dr Lown is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (2007), and fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (2014).

Dr Manil Subesinghe, Consultant Radiologist from Kings College London, who will explain the role of scans in diagnosis, treatment and follow up, trained at Guy’s, King’s & St. Thomas’ (GKT) School of Medicine qualifying in 2004. He developed a subspecialty interest in Radionuclide Radiology and completed a one-year PET-CT fellowship in Leeds. He was appointed as a Consultant Radiologist in Oxford in 2014 and then to his current post as a Clinical Lecturer in PET imaging at KCL in 2017. His research interests include the role of functional and molecular imaging in cancer.

Professor Andy Davies, Consultant Haematologist from University Hospital Southampton, will be talking about the latest trials and treatments. He was awarded honours in medicine, and also gained a first-class Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Southampton. He went on to train in Medical Oncology at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London, and as a Cancer Research UK clinical fellow undertook a PhD examining the molecular mechanisms underlying transformation of follicular lymphoma to more aggressive histological sub-types.

Professor Davies specialises in the treatment of malignant lymphoma and the use of high-dose chemotherapy. He has extensive experience in early phase trials, including leading several first lymphoma studies. He is Chair of the UK National Cancer Research Institute High Grade Lymphoma Study Group and Director of Cancer Research UK/National Institute of Health Southampton Experimental Cancer Medicine Centre. He is also the Wessex regional lead for cancers in teenagers and young adults.

Our wellbeing panels will be led by: Dr Anna Lagerdahl, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, who will outline strategies for supporting mental health. Anna has experience of working with a range of psychological difficulties and physical health conditions and specialises in the field of cancer. Her work has led to the publication of several studies examining the experiences and needs of people with cancer. In addition to therapeutic work, she has several years’ experience of working as a senior university lecturer, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as trainee clinical psychologists, on the topics of clinical psychology and physical health.

Anya Aspinall, Lymphoma Advanced Nurse Practitioner from Oxford University Hospitals, will deliver a practical session on keeping well while on active monitoring, in treatment, and thereafter. As a Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS) in haematology Anya offers support, advice and guidance to people with cancer and other blood disorders. She helps to join up the different aspects of care for those affected by lymphoma and plays an important role in maximising wellbeing and quality of life.
