The Big Ideas for Better Health Awards were launched by the biopharmaceutical company AbbVie in 2015 to recognise, celebrate and share exceptional examples of healthcare improvements and innovation that demonstrate clear benefit to the lives of patients.

Our Live your Life programme was recognised in the Supporting Self-Management and Self-Care category for addressing a real area of unmet need - post-treatment support for people living with lymphoma. By providing patients with the specific information and support needed for long-term self-management of lymphoma, the programme has seen improved quality of life, knowledge of the disease and enhanced health engagement for participants. 100% of attendees say they feel they learned what they can do to live better during and after lymphoma and 97% state they feel more confident in their ability to recognise signs and symptoms that should be reported to a healthcare professional. The approach has already been rolled out across the UK, with over 50 events taking place in 2018.

As a winner, we will receive a bursary of up to £3,000 to spend on research to grow our own experience and share best practice to benefit patients and/or the NHS. The AbbVie Big Ideas for Better Health Awards were presented by the Secretary of State for Health Matt Hancock at the House of Commons in London on 20 November 2018.

Stephen Scowcroft, Director of Business Development at Lymphoma Action said: “We are immensely proud to have been recognised for our hard work in Supporting Self-Management and Self-Care. This award will allow us to reach and have an impact on even more people affected by lymphoma, the UK’s fifth most common cancer in adults and the most common cancer in 15-24 year olds. Our Live Your Life programme offers free support and activities to help people take control and find their ‘new normal’ after such a life changing experience. The bursary will help make sure even more people have access to the much needed information which will empower them to live beyond their lymphoma. On behalf of all the staff, volunteers and people affected by lymphoma we would like to sincerely thank AbbVie for the difference this award will make to thousands of people’s lives.”

Philip Schwab, UK Government Affairs Director, AbbVie commented: “We are committed to looking beyond the medicine for solutions that help improve health outcomes for people living with disease. These awards recognise true examples of grass roots innovation, that support the NHS by freeing up valuable resources that can be used in other areas.”
