Stress Awareness Month 2022

April is Stress Awareness Month, which aims to raise awareness of the reasons why people get stressed and how to tackle it. The theme for this year is ‘Community’, in recognition of the last two years being some of the most challenging years we will faced globally.

Living through the COVID-19 pandemic has been a significant stressor for most people. It brought stress, loneliness and social isolation to the forefront of everyone’s lives, and it made us all realise the importance of community in combatting this isolation. We were so pleased that we were able to offer digital ways for people to stay connected and feel part of a community. We hear from people how valuable to closed Facebook group and online support groups have been in helping people stay connected.

Not knowing how the virus might affect people with lymphoma might have caused you more stress than normal. Feeling stressed or scared is a completely natural and normal response to feeling overwhelmed or feeling unable to cope. Knowing and recognising the signs of stress might help you prepare yourself to cope better with the stressor.

It can be helpful to take steps to look after your wellbeing in times when you might be stressed, so that it doesn’t affect you in the longer term – for example, stress can affect your energy levels and emotional wellbeing

  • Using breathing techniques aims to help you feel calmer and stop you from breathing too quickly.
  • Talking to someone about how you’re feeling can improve your ability to cope with what is stressing you.
  • Complementary therapies, such as yoga, might help you feel more relaxed.

Increasing your sense of community is one way that might help you improve your stress levels. Whether it be starting a new hobby, decided to do more walking, volunteering to help other people, or doing an online quiz with family, your stress levels and emotional wellbeing will improve.
