September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, and we are holding our second Bridges of Britain walk!
Our 2020 Bridges of Britain walk was an amazing day... 117 walkers raised over £34,000! And this year we're aiming to make it bigger and better than ever, so that everyone can take part and do their bit to raise money and awareness to support people affected by lymphoma.
It doesn't matter where you live in the UK - all you need to do is find a bridge in your local area, plan and walk your own route, and ask your friends and family to sponsor you to take part. Every 27 minutes, one of us is diagnosed with lymphoma, but with your help we can be there to make sure no one has to face lymphoma alone.
This is a family friendly event as you can pick your own distance - either walk for 27 minutes, for 2.7 miles, or for 7 miles - so you can get the little ones involved, and maybe invite the grandparents too. Perhaps you could all have fun looking at a map to plan your route, and maybe you could all play a game of Poohsticks when you reach your bridge!
Everyone taking part will receive a medal, and grown-ups will get a Lymphoma Action t-shirt to walk in. Let us know if you will be walking with a pooch, as we will see if we can get their tails wagging by sending them a Lymphoma Action doggy bandana to wear while they walk!
Each route should include at least 1 bridge, but how many can you fit into your walk? There will be a prize for the person who can walk over the most bridges!
Every 27 minutes, one of us is diagnosed with lymphoma, and to highlight this fact to help raise awareness, we are encouraging everyone to walk on Sunday 26 September. But if you would prefer to take part on a different date, or if you would like to split your walk over multiple days, then you can!
Event date: Sunday 26 September, or any date that works best for you
Distance: 7 miles, 2.7 miles, or walk for 27 minutes
Bridges: 1+. (Aim for your route to include at least 1 bridge!)
Location: All across the UK!
Registration fee: £10 per adult, £5 per child (child tickets are for 4-16 year olds, under 3s go free), or £25 per family (2 adults and 2 children)
Sponsorship target: £150
How to get involved
- Register to take part. Why not get everyone in your house involved so you can all walk together?!) Every participant receives an online fundraising pack, a medal and a certificate to thank them for taking part. Adults will also receive a t-shirt to walk in.
- Plan your 7 mile route to include at least one bridge, and see how many bridges you can fit in! Perhaps your family and friends would like to take part with you (provided you keep safe and within the most up-to-date Government guidelines)
- Set up an online fundraising page where your friends and family can sponsor you - our recommended partner for this event is GivePenny (as it's integrated with Strava, Fitbit and Runkeeper so that you can track your walk, and integrated with Spotify so that you can ask your friends for donations in exchange for adding a song to your playlist) but you can of course use JustGiving, Virgin Money Giving, or set up a Facebook fundraiser if you prefer.
- Share your fundraising page on social media, tell people why you are taking part, and ask for donations from your friends and family.
The money you raise will help us continue to deliver our services at this difficult time, when our income has dropped due to COVID-19 and when those affected by lymphoma need us more than ever. Thank you so much for your vital support!
